@ Shaker Library
grant-funded project to digitize more
than 10,000 building cards and create
the searchable database, which in turn
links to shakerbuildings.com. These
records contain the home’s historical
information, including the construction
date, original owner, architect, estimated
cost to build, and materials. They also
note whether there are blueprints
available in the Library’s Local History
Collection. If so, contact the Library’s
Local History Librarian to obtain a digital
copy of them.
“Research Your Shaker
Home” offers helpful links to find
information about architects and any
other Shaker homes they designed.
Homeowners may be surprised by the
variety of styles their architects created,
or perhaps they will discover a twin home
elsewhere in the City.
Looking for a list of previous
owners? Property Transfers from the
founding of Shaker Village to the 1990s
are listed in Plat Map books in the Local
History Collection. Property Transfers
from 1975 to the present can be searched
in Cuyahoga County’s “MyPlace” Property
Tax Database.
For early deeds, search the Cuyahoga
County Fiscal Officer’s Recorded
Documents Database by using the full
names of the home’s previous owners
and selecting appropriate date ranges.
“Sometimes, you can trace the ownership
of a property all the way back to the Van
Sweringen Company,” says Hays.
