Literary Ink
Winston Churchill had an anchor tattooed
on his left forearm. George Orwell had a
blue dot tattooed on each of his knuckles,
and Dorothy Parker had a star tattooed on
her elbow to commemorate a memorable
night out. Like these literary figures, some
Library staff members reveal that ink can
be found in more than books.
Circulation assistant Alex Staeven has
a sleeve tattoo of a metal arm. He is a fan
of Fullmetal Alchemist, a Japanese manga
and anime series where the main character
has a metal prosthetic arm.
“My tattoo is a tribute to and
reminder of my favorite show,” says
Staevan. “Watching the anime series
gave me a
much-needed
escape.” When
he is not busy
providing
curbside
service for
cardholders
and checking
in and out
material, he
keeps current
reading
articles about
politics and
public policy.
He cites The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
as his favorite book.
Children’s Librarian Annelise
Hoftmaurer’s favorite tattoo is a picture of
a small bird her then 5-year-old niece drew
for her in a birthday card. Hoftmaurer’s
first job was
at the District
of Columbia
Public Library
and she had
moved far
away from
her niece. She
missed being
part of her young life and had the little
drawing tattooed on her shoulder as a
reminder of their very special relationship.
“My experience helping raise her is the
reason I chose to work with children,” says
Hoftmaurer.
She is currently reading fiction by
novelist, poet, essayist, short-story writer,
and artist Tao Lin, and nonfiction about
the ancient Indian medicine system
known as Ayurveda.
