Candice Avery is a library assistant
in the Computer Center. She earned
an Associate Degree in 2017 from the
Virginia
Marti College
of Art and
Design in
Applied
Business
in Fashion
Merchandise,
where she
orchestrated
a fashion
show, created
visual
displays for local boutiques and the school,
and received the Presidential Academic
Achievement Award. Candice has worked
in some form of customer service all of
her working life and enjoys helping and
engaging with others.
“I want everyone who comes into the
Computer Center to be glad they came to
me for help,” says Candice. The best part
of her job is making others smile, and she
strives to answer all questions as clearly as
possible; if she can’t find the answers, she
finds someone who can.
Candice’s favorite book is the
Newbery Medal-winning Bridge to
Terabithia by Katherine Paterson.
She also enjoys the Twilight series,
fantasy novels, and any book filled with
“characters with a twist of imagination.”
She is a member of the Library’s
Green Team, a group studying ways to
make the Library a more sustainable
place. She is also a mentor in The Leading
Ladies, Inc., a volunteer organization that
empowers women of all ages, helping
them learn strategies that can lead to the
development of leadership, service, and
social opportunities.
Candice attributes her success to her
mother and role model, Connie Avery,
and Janet Simonovich, a professor at
her college, who encouraged her poetry
writing and fashion design. SL
