One Community Reads is a collaboration among
the City Club of Cleveland, Playhouse Square,
and nine local public library systems to create
a shared reading experience for the Greater
Cleveland community. This year’s selection is the
Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Evicted: Poverty and
Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond.
It will transform your understanding of
poverty and the centrality of home. The author
spent eight years studying what he calls an
“epidemic of evictions.” For many of the families
in his book, rent consumed up to 80 percent
of their income. Read the book and join in
provocative discussions.
Programming in all libraries begins January
15 and will include book discussions, film
screenings, and panel discussions on the topics of
economic exploitation, inequality, and housing,
and how we might come together as a community
to address the devastating problem of eviction.
The program will conclude on March 15 with
an author appearance by Matthew Desmond at
the Ohio Theater. Desmond is a Harvard Fellow,
Princeton sociologist, and MacArthur Genius. His
talk will be live streamed to participating libraries.
The Library has planned events and
activities for all ages in its Evicted programming.
