between the School District and the residents, businesses, and community and civic organizations.”
With that in mind, Shaker Library has joined the Early Childhood Task Force convened
by the Schools and is working to improve educational performance through a variety of Library
A+ Partners in Education efforts, such as the new afterschool Reading Skills Center to help
meet the Third Grade Reading Guarantee, the Summer Reading Program, and the various Zero
to K offerings that assure Kindergarten readiness.
World Café and Follow-up Surveys Provide Library
with Feedback on Facilities Studies
Residents and public officials provided valuable feedback regarding the direction of the
Library’s facilities at two “World Café” sessions last September.
Participants were not averse to a single facility, and a majority felt the current Main
Library location would be the best site for renovation/expansion or new construction.
Comments revealed that there was interest in a more modern library building with glass and
light, provided it is tastefully designed and has a traditional feel. Residents were also offered
a chance to choose designs online.
The World Café follow-up survey revealed, “The Library must remain welcoming to a
diverse population of patrons – age, socio-economic status, literacy, culture, etc.”
Also: “The library needs to continue adventurous community programming, such as
music, theater, readings, crafts, book discussions, etc.”
Another: “Layout of the facility should be intuitive, with periodic orientation opportunities,
and have accessible shelving for all ages.”
Finally: “There should be a central location if the facilities must be merged.”
A teacher opined that there is too much emphasis on DVDs and electronics in general.
She is less interested in the furnishings of the building or “being able to eat in the library”
than in maintaining an educational atmosphere. In short, she believes the Library “should
be a place of learning.”
