A Life: Pat Pogue,
You’ve Probably Already Met Her
A heartfelt “welcome,”
a basket of information,
and an invitation to join
the club (the Eastside
Welcome Club, that is).
That is the kind of warm
greeting that’s both
Shaker Heights, and
yet so rare in a
busy world that
O ver the course of 35 years,
Pat Pogue, Shaker’s Welcome Lady and
advisor to the Eastside Welcome Club board,
has greeted nearly 13,000 new Shaker residents in
just that way. Many residents remember opening their
door to find Pat standing there with a basket full of
information, including maps and merchant coupons.
Perhaps more importantly, they remember meeting a
long-time Shaker resident whose approachable nature
and depth of knowledge provided exactly what they
needed at the time: a resource and a friendly face.
“Pat came to my house and warmly welcomed me to Shaker Heights, providing
me with coupons and information about Shaker. It’s really tremendous because almost
everyone I meet in Shaker has had Pat come to their home,” says Mai Moore, who
moved to Shaker in 2010.
When Pat began welcoming newcomers in 1978, it was easy to get the phone
numbers and information necessary to schedule an appointment to visit, usually with
a stay-at-home mom. The process worked so well that there were times when she called
on as many as 50 newcomers a month.
Today, with a greater reliance on cell phones and busy personal and professional
lives, it is harder to schedule a visit. Despite these hurdles, Pat continues her work
undeterred, often dropping by people’s homes on the weekends. These days, she says
she is just as likely to meet with a stay-at-home dad as a stay-at-home mom.
Although the context Pat works in has changed, she says, “What has not changed
is the fact that I consider myself truly fortunate to have the opportunity to meet and
be helpful to people from all over the world. I can’t imagine a better place than
Shaker Heights in which to live, and I’m happy to do whatever I can to
ensure that every newcomer shares that sentiment.” On her 35th
anniversary as Shaker’s Welcome Lady, we salute Pat Pogue. SL
