Longtime English in Action Teacher Brondy Shanker
Wins “Most Treasured Volunteer” Award
Brondy Shanker received the “Most Treasured Volunteer” award from the Center for
Community Solutions at a special ceremony on November 8 at the City Club of Cleveland.
Shaker Library nominated her for the award.
Brondy teaches English in Action, an ESL class at the Shaker Library, where she has
taught hundreds of new Americans over the past 25 years. She began her teaching career
as a remedial reading teacher and taught second grade at the former Moreland School,
now the Shaker Library.

Contest Reception
The Library invites the community to
the Main Library from 4:30 to 5:30 pm
Friday, January 17 for the presentation of
the winners in the Library’s 16th Annual
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. student
writing contest.
Youth in grades 3-8 were asked to
write a short essay telling what they
could do to ensure that everyone is
treated equally. Meet the winners and
hear their affirming essays.
15th Annual
Barbara Luton Art Contest
Artists interested in entering the
Library’s 15th annual Barbara Luton Art
Competition are encouraged to pick up
an entry form at the circulation desks at
either library. The contest is named in
honor of Shaker resident Barbara Luton, a
former Library director who oversaw the
renovation of the old Moreland School
into the current Main Library.

Receives Two Statewide Awards
The Library and the City Landmark Commission worked together on the Shaker
Centennial digitization project HistoricShaker.com, which included ShakerBuildings.com
and Shaker content on ClevelandHistorical.org. Their collaborative project won a 2013
Public Education and Awareness Preservation Award from the Ohio Historic Preservation
Office and a 2013 OHRAB (Ohio Historic Records Advisory Board) Achievement Award
along with a small stipend to be used on further historical preservation endeavors.
The project was administered by Shaker Library’s Local History Librarian Meghan
Hays and Ann Klavora, principal planner with the City of Shaker Heights.
