Moreland
RISING
The
Transformative
Power of
Public Art
Art will bloom on three
empty lots throughout Moreland,
transforming them into active,
engaging spaces. Through a
partnership with Ingenuity Cleveland,
three large-scale temporary public
art exhibits by local artists will
be installed this summer,
inviting neighbors, visitors,
and passersby to
stop and linger.
Dana Depew:
Makeshift
Sanctuary
Painter, sculptor, and would-be
farmer Dana Depew resurrects castoffs
and found objects into wholly
new and unique objects. One of nine
children who grew up on a farm in Medina,
Depew inherited a love of antiques – and a vast
collection – from his mother. A key figure in the cultural
revitalization of the Tremont neighborhood through his gallery, Asterisk, Depew has
been instrumental in supporting Cleveland’s art community.
Depew’s Makeshift Sanctuary in Shaker Heights will build on themes of
reinterpretation and rebirth: a serene enclosure made from found objects gleaned from
vacant and foreclosed homes located in the Slavic Village neighborhood of Cleveland.
The temporary structure is fabricated from reclaimed stained glass, storm
windows, latticework, wooden railings, and other architectural elements. The work
is nestled among landscape elements including stone and wood drawn from the
immediate neighborhood, inviting peace and reflection. Depew is a longtime curator
of the Rooms to Let in Slavic Village, and the tireless force behind the construction of
more than 1000 birdhouses for his Urban Aviary project (pictured above).
