Moved to Shaker

It was January 9, 2000, when my plane from the
Turks and Caicos islands landed at Cleveland Hopkins
International airport. I came here to study computer science
at Cleveland State University and have never left.
During my studies at Cleveland State, I lived downtown and
in Lakewood. When I got my first job, my manager lived in Shaker
Heights. From the moment he described Shaker Heights to me, I
knew it in my gut that I would love it here. I couldn’t quite tell why,
but I had a feeling that I would feel right at home. Now I live here
with my husband and two children, and we love the access to public
transportation and nature. We love walking out our front door to stroll
along these beautiful streets with friendly and welcoming people.
We have been welcomed here. We love that Shaker is a diverse
community – racially, economically, and socially. Having biracial
children, it is important to us that our children are raised in a
heterogeneous community. Not only that, Shaker Heights has a certain
nostalgia that is kept alive by its residents: block parties, sharing
a meal and music around a fire pit, and exchanging cookies and
gathering around a piano to sing during the holidays. I love that my
family and I get to experience community traditions, and I proudly say,
“There’s no place like Shaker Heights.”
