Shaker Heights High School senior and student artist Kya Goodwin was stunned when she learned that her mixed media
artwork, “Transparency,” won a top honor – a Gold Key Award – in the regional Scholastic Art Competition. While she’s been an
artist for years, she always considered her art to be a form of personal expression; it didn’t occur to her that others might find
meaning in her work as well. Now that her artwork is being considered for a national scholastic award, she’s started to see her
talents in a new light. Learn more about Kya and what inspires her work.
Q: Tell us about “Transparency.”
A: It’s one of a five-part series of my family. In this piece, I wanted to show my family and that they’ve all made me who I am.
So my idea was to use a bunch of mini-photos of my family and then make them into a portrait of me. I took photos of about
eight or so family members on a digital camera. I knew that I wanted to have a variety of shades in black and white. Then I
edited them in PhotoShop and put them in place based on a reference photo that my teacher took of me. It took some time
and it was a little annoying to do at first, but I’m happy with how it turned out.
Q: Why did you choose yellow?
A: Yellow is my favorite color. I try to use the same colors to represent my family. So, my mom is usually red because she’s
such a strong woman and my dad is orange because to me, that’s more of a chill, calming color.
Q: How did you become interested in art?
A:When I was small, I had leukemia. I’ve been in remission for 11 years, but when I was little and in treatment, my mom
enrolled me in art and music therapy. So art just became something that I was used to doing and I really enjoyed it.
