SHAKER LIFE | SPRING 2014 21
Operating Levy
on May Ballot
At the recommendation of its Finance
and Audit Committee, the Board of
Education voted on December 17 to
place an operating levy on the May 2014
ballot. At 6.9 mills, the request is smaller
than past levies and comes a year later
than originally projected. The Board has
pledged to lower the millage requested
and lengthen the interval between
operating levies going forward.
The levy is needed to maintain the
programs and services that make Shaker
distinctive and attractive to families;
to ensure that every child gets the full
benefit of the Shaker experience; and to
maintain a prudent fund balance.
Linda D. Lalley, a business consultant
as well as a former president of the
League of Women Voters-Shaker Heights
and officer at the state and national levels,
is volunteering as chair of the campaign.
Additional information about the
levy is available at shaker.org.
