Digital Resources that Promote Learning and Literacy
There are many things to consider when choosing an online learning resource for
children: their ages, their strengths and weaknesses, and even the ways they learn
by reading, listening, and doing. The growing number of digital resources, and
which ones to use with which child, can be overwhelming.
That’s why Shaker’s librarians have created a list of resources to help parents
and caregivers engage with their children and make learning exciting. Yes, there
is an app for that!
Whether you want to teach your preschooler the ABCs, read an interactive
story, or help your teens prepare for the SAT or ACT, these recommended online
resources can enhance learning and help children have success in school.

26 FALL 2020 | WWW.SHAKER.LIFE
This program encourages parents to read 1,000
books to their children before they enter kindergarten.
There is an app to help keep track of the books
read. After every 100 books, the Library presents parents
with a certificate with their child’s name on it to
be treasured in the baby’s book of milestones. (Good
news: Multiple readings of the same book count, since
kids love to hear their favorites again and again.)
Dolly Parton Imagination Library | imaginationlibrary.com
Parents can sign up their children from birth to age 5 to receive a free book
in the mail each month until they turn five. All Cuyahoga County residents are
eligible. Children can build their own personal libraries of age-appropriate books –
and who doesn’t like getting a special package each month?
VOX Books & Wonderbooks
These books are available to borrow from
Shaker Library; they include an audio player.
As children listen, they
can follow along with the
words being read to help
them make the connection
between the printed and
the spoken word. Headphones may be plugged
into the books for car trips or when multiple
children choose different books.
Storyline Online | storylineonline.net
Children and parents will enjoy the
SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s streaming videos
of celebrated actors reading children’s books
alongside creatively produced illustrations.
PBS Kids | pbskids.org
This website offers a variety of fun games
that can help kids learn more about the world,
and it offers closed captioning to provide
accessibility for all little eyes and ears.
