Library’s 1992 Time Capsule:
Preserving a Snapshot of the Past as a Gift for the Future
While preparing for the 2020 renovations, Maintenance Services Manager Rusty
Taphous discovered a dusty marble container and wondered what treasures he might
find inside. When he brought the relic to Library Director Amy Switzer she realized he
had uncovered the time capsule from 1992. It was filled with material all dated that same
year. Prepared before the Library had a Local History Collection, it captured the City at a
moment in time.
After the City and the Library Board entered into “lease agreements for the purchase
of the existing library at 3450 Lee Road by the City and a lease of the Moreland School
building to the Library,” the Library wanted to celebrate the event with a time capsule.
Robb Forward of Brown Forward Funeral Home donated the container. The City, Schools,
community associations, and churches contributed items to be included in the capsule. The
Cornerstone Rededication was held on September 9, 1992. David Molyneaux was president
of the Library Board and served with
Glenn Krassen, Rosalind Cohen,
Annette Butler, Donald Haley, Robert
Newman, and Charles Rosenberg.
Most of the items in the time
capsule were bulletins and flyers
describing the events of the time, and
can now be found in the Local History
collection. These items captured the
essence of the community in 1992. The
Connection, a newspaper published by
Friends of Shaker Square, promoted
its 16th Annual Very Square Affair, an
evening party held around the square to
celebrate the end of the school year and
the beginning of summer.
The Schools’ contributed a district
pin, a VHS tape about the schools, a
spiral catalog, a 1992 Gristmill yearbook,
and the February 13, 1992 issue of the
Shaker Heights High School newspaper,
The Shakerite. The issue reported on the
establishment of the African American
Cultural Club, and quoted its advisor and
social studies teacher Reuben Henderson
saying, “You can’t be an educated
group of people without knowing your
common heritage.”
