“Sciatica refers to pain
that radiates down your
leg because of an issue
with the sciatic nerve.
The pain can vary, but is
typically felt in the back,
buttocks, down the
back of the leg, and
sometimes into the
knee, foot or toes,”
says John Butler, MD,

According to Dr. Butler, the symptoms of
sciatica – generally pain, numbness and/or
weakness – usually affect just one leg. “Patients
could have one of these symptoms, or a
combination of them,” he says.
A variety of problems can lead to the squeezing
or pinching of the sciatic nerve. These include
herniated or slipped discs, spinal stenosis
(narrowing of the spinal cord), a vertebra
slipping out of place, muscle tightness and
even pregnancy.
“The pain of sciatica is not subtle. If your leg
hurts, tingles or feels numb, if you can’t move
your foot as well as you did before, or if you
have pain now that you did not have a month
ago, you should seek medical care,” says
Dr. Butler.
Diagnosis of sciatica is typically done through
a physical exam, along with traditional X-rays
or an MRI. If you do have sciatica, the problem
will usually resolve in time with nonsurgical
treatments involving activity modification,
physical therapy and medication. Surgery may
be needed if the pain persists.
