While most of Shaker Heights – and the country – was
staying at home last May, the Van Aken District, in
collaboration with the City and LAND Studio, installed
six new 8x10 murals in Bowser Alley, the walkway that
runs between the parking garage and the Market Hall.
The murals are the creations of a diverse and eclectic
array of artists, including several from the Cleveland
area, such as April Bleakney and Darius Steward.
Titled “Amazing Neighborhoods are the Product
of Amazing Neighbors,” the exhibit represents the first
of what will be a revolving series in Bowser Alley. The
exhibit adds to the other public art pieces installed
in the District since its opening in 2019, including
Sidechairs, the clusters of orange chairs placed
throughout the area inviting people to sit and chat.
“This new exhibit space in Bowser Alley represents
an ongoing commitment to a robust public art
program for the District,” says Kara Hamley O’Donnell,
principal planner for the City, noting that plans are
also underway for a signature public art piece for the
District. LAND Studio is also working with the District
and the City on a mural project for the wall outside of
