Here’s What You Need to Know
It might seem surprising given how small they are, but there
are zoning laws that pertain to Little Free Libraries. Here are
some things to keep in mind if you are planning one in Shaker.
• Planning Department approval of the location and design is needed.
• LFLs are considered a part of the mission of institutions such
as Onaway School, St. Dominic Church, or Gridley Park, but
still require Planning Department approval.
• A location on City-owned property, such as Gridley Park,
requires a letter of request to the City’s Chief Administrative
Officer stating the intended location to initiate administrative
approval and a review of the location by Planning, Recreation,
and Public Works.
• A location at a residential or commercial property is limited
by the zoning code to the rear yard where all other accessory
uses such as swing sets, garages, and gazebos are allowed.
A Little Free Library proposed for the front yard of a residential
or commercial property would need a zoning variance.
