chess player. Register for one or both classes

Once you have learned the game, join
the Library’s Chess Club for adults and
teens which meets from 7-8:45 pm the
first and third Mondays of the month at
Main Library beginning October 20. Chess
sets will be provided, refreshments will
be served, and no registration is required.

Opportunities
American Sign Language teacher Valerie
Williams will teach basic signing using role
play and other fun activities from 2- 4 pm
Sundays, October 5, 12, 26, and November
2, 9 and 16. Her class is progressive,
building from one skill to another, and is
appropriate for adults and children over
10 accompanied by an adult. Participants
should expect homework each week.
Register early for this popular class.
On Saturdays In November, Mary
Scribner will offer a Math Review for adults.
Each two-hour class will focus on specific
topics. Register in advance online or by

Genealogy Workshops Continue
at the Main Library
The Library and the African-American
Genealogical Society continue their
successful collaboration on genealogy
research programs. Their Hands-on
Genealogy Research program will be held
from 10:15 am-1 pm Saturday, October 25.
This workshop is presented by the Education
Committee of the AAGS and participants
can use the Library’s computers to research
records on a variety of databases.
From 10:15 am-1 pm Saturday,
November 22, Dr. Deborah Abbott will
present a Genealogy & Slavery Research
workshop. Researching the slave era can
present significant challenges, and Dr.
Abbott will focus on the clues and resources
needed to recreate your ancestors’ journey
from slavery to freedom.
Both programs are preceded by a
9:30 am general meeting of the African-
American Genealogical Society, which
is open to the public. No registration is
needed, and anyone interested in genealogy
is welcome.
