Chapter 39 Veterans for Peace Present War Letters at Main Library
To commemorate Veterans Day, Chapter 39 Veterans for Peace will sponsor a
public reading of wartime letters and personal statements of veterans from 7-8 pm
Tuesday, November 11.
The letters evoke the stark reality of U.S. wars dating from the Revolutionary
War to Afghanistan. It is a poignant program that observes and honors the
experiences and sacrifices of veterans without glorifying war.
2014 Western Reserve Award from the
Western Reserve Chapter of the Society
of Architectural Historians. Architect
Jack Bialosky, whose firm has offices in
Cleveland and New York City, will
also be on hand.
The book evolved
from a 2007 ArtNEO exhibit, which
displayed photographs and floor plans
of Cleveland’s modern architecture with
information about the designers. At that
time, Nina was curator and James was
president of ArtNEO, which promotes the
art and architecture of Northeast Ohio.
Throughout their careers, James and
Nina have recognized the need to document
and preserve Cleveland’s underappreciated
yet rich architectural heritage. Beautifully
illustrated with more than 150 drawings
and photographs in color and black-andwhite,
the book features the work of six
architects: Don Hisaka, John Terence Kelly,
Robert Little, William Morris, Ernst Payer,
and Fred Toguchi. In their own words, the
architects, clients, and restorers discuss the
homes they created and preserved.
Following the presentation, light
refreshments will be served, and books will
be available for sale and signing.

New MyCom Grant Funds Library
Effort to Help Elementary Students
Improve Reading Skills
The Library has received $15,000 in
2014-2015 MyCom funds, the same
amount as 2013-2014, to provide out-ofschool
activities for school-age youth.
The funds will be used to create a Reading
Skills Center for children in kindergarten
through grade four in coordination with the
Shaker Schools.
The Ohio Department of Education
recently implemented its “Third Grade
Reading Guarantee” to identify students
in each grade level through third grade
who are behind in reading. Children must
reach proficiency to advance from third to
fourth grade, although there will be some
allowance for remedial work in fourth grade.
The Library has designed the Reading
Skills Center as a supportive place where
students can get extra reading practice,
work on increasing their reading level, or
brush up on reading skills before taking
their schools’ standardized test. Each
student can spend time reading one-on-one
with a teacher, independently, or practicing
skills using online resources.
The Reading Skills Center is open from
4:30 to 6 pm Mondays, Tuesdays, and
Wednesdays at Main Library for students in
grades 1-4. Adults are asked to be present to
register the child at the first visit.
Children, Children Everywhere
The Library’s children’s rooms are busy places
with resources and programs for children of
all ages. Fall programs for the preschool set
include Crazy 8s, a high-energy math club
for preschoolers; Butterfly Hands, a baby’s
introduction to signs, and basic signs for
preschoolers, and drop-in story times for a
variety of different age groups. Each program
is age-specific and designed to capture and
hold a little one’s attention.
For real fun around a faux fire, families
can celebrate fall at a Bonfire Bash. Children
can make an autumn craft, and enjoy a story,
songs, and cider and donuts at this family
event scheduled for 7 pm, October 20.
School-age children can join a writing
club, read to a dog, or celebrate reading
at a variety of book parties that promote
authors and reading. Consider celebrating
with Big Nate and the rest of the gang from
PS 38 at Woods Branch from 4:15–5 pm on
Thursday, October 2.
Look pretty in pink? Become a
Pinkerella at a Pinkalicious Book Party from
4:15-5 pm Thursday, November 6 at Main
Library, or swagger over to Woods Branch
