Building Connections
Brick by Brick
To an onlooker, the scene might seem
chaotic: children crowding around bins
of colorful Legos, picking bricks, and
affixing them to their creations as they
move from table to table, searching for
the perfect piece. Several children play
with a boat, discussing which bricks
to add to their creative craft. Two girls
working together to build a house, decide
to attach base plates to build a mansion.
All around the room, children share
Legos, chat, and offer suggestions, while
getting to know one another.
Legos have a universal appeal and
provide a fun way for children to use their
imaginations, to improvise, to share, to
cooperate, and to build fine motor skills.
The Library’s drop-in play time makes a
large collection of these building bricks
available to all, with the added benefit of
building friendships.
The Library’s Lego Free Play for
children in grades K-6 is held from
4-5 pm on the first and third Wednesdays
of each month at Main Library. During
this creative, unstructured play time,
children share ideas and solve problems
while working together on a construction
project. These cooperative skills serve
them well in school, at home, and in their
careers. While their children build with
Legos, parents strike up conversations,
building community.
