Rennick was bitten by the magic bug as a
youth, when he discovered some magic tricks in
a box of cereal. Years later he attended a Harry
Blackstone Jr. magic show and later has honed
his craft by studying magicians from the past.

It’s Full STEAM Ahead in the
Library Children’s Room
In March the Library will offer a variety of
STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering,
Arts, and Math) programs for children,
including a Preschool Math Club. The four-week
series of fun math activities is geared for
children ages 3-5.
STEAM Team is a four-week series for
children in grades 1-4 and features a special
project or experiment each week. Shrinky Dinks
is an afterschool event offering students in
grades 4-6 the opportunity to design and create
objects with “magic” shrinking plastic.

American Girl Doll Programs Scheduled at Woods Branch
Children in grades 1-5 are invited to view history through the books of the American Girl
dolls to discover what life was like during their eras.
Meet American Girl Doll Kirsten from 2:30-3:15 pm Saturday, January 10 and meet
American Girl Doll Addy from 2:30-3:15 pm Saturday, February 7 at Bertram Woods Branch.
Each program features a reading from one of the books in the doll’s series, a craft, and
a snack. Dolls welcome! Registration is required for these popular programs.
Reading Skills Center at Main Library
The Reading Skills Center is open from 4:30-6 pm Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays
on the second floor of the Main Library. The Center is open to children in grades 1–4 and
provides an opportunity for students to receive extra reading practice, work on increasing
their reading level, or to brush up on reading skills before taking a standardized test.
Each student can spend time reading one-to-one with a helpful teacher, spend time
reading independently, or practice skills using online resources. Parents are encouraged to
use this helpful free resource. An adult must be present to register the child at the first visit.
MLK Student Writing Contest Reception
The Library invites the community to the Main Library from 4 to 5 pm Friday, January 16
for the presentation of the winners in the Library’s 17th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
student writing contest.
Youth in grades 3-8 were asked to write a short essay describing the characteristics a
person needs to make change. Meet the winners and hear their affirming essays.
