Library Launches Science Café
at Woods Branch
Beginning in September, the Library will
offer Science Café, a monthly series featuring
a presentation on a current scientific
topic followed by discussion, questions,
and refreshments.
The cafés will present scientific topics
in a relatable, engaging way to adults
and advanced high school students in
an informal setting. The first program,
“Mars Exploration in Science and Science
Fiction,” with Geoffrey A. Landis, will be
held at 6:30 pm on Monday, September 18
at Woods Branch.
Landis is a scientist and a science
fiction author who has written two books
and more than 80 works of short fiction.
His most recent novel, Mars Crossing, is
available in paperback from Tor Books.
He works at the NASA Glenn Research
Center on developing advanced technologies
for spaceflight. He is a member of the
Mars Exploration Rovers Science team,
and is a fellow of the NASA Institute for
Advanced Concepts.
His talk will cover some of the ideas
of Mars in works of science fiction, and
how Mars is viewed by scientists now,
including the most recent results from the
NASA Mars rovers.
