Shaker Library Endowment Fund: A Focus on Our Future
“A little library growing each year is an honorable part of a man’s history.”
–Henry Ward Beecher
The Shaker Heights Public Library Fund was established in December 2000 with a
generous gift of $10,000 from the Friends of the Shaker Library. In March 2003, the
Fund received $100,000 from the estate of Erma D. Norville. Aside from those significant
bequests, most donations range from $25 to $250.
The fund is held and managed by the Cleveland Foundation, which invests the gifts
for greater return on investment and prudent growth. The purpose of the fund is to
provide a perpetual source of stable support for the Library now and into the future.
Six percent of the asset value of the fund as of January 1 of each year is available for
distribution. While money is available annually, the
Library has chosen not to take regularly scheduled
distributions but rather to take money out as
needed for special purposes.
A tax-deductible gift to the Shaker Heights
Public Library Fund will enable the Library
to continue providing superior resources and
services for our community both now and for
future generations.

Shaker Reads: Tune In!
@ Shaker Library
The Library offers summer reading programs for every age. The Library welcomes
readers of all ages to a summer filled with reading and listening.
Through generous funding from Friends of the Shaker Library, librarians
plan summer programs with the goal of providing stimulating reading and
listening to young people. The programs are designed to encourage kids to read
whatever they want, which helps to instill a love of reading for recreation. And
studies have demonstrated that kids who read for fun often out-perform kids
who don’t in school.
Preschoolers and their parents can sign up for a read-to-me program and win
prizes. School-age children can read and earn beads and brag tags, and teens can
read and enter weekly drawings for gift cards to Barnes and Noble Bookstore and
be eligible for the grand prize of a Kindle Fire.
Again this summer, OverDrive has generously agreed to donate $1 to Shaker
Library for every book an adult reads, up to $500. Read what you want and as
often as you like. Any book in any genre or any format counts.
