Doreen Katz
Appointed to Library Board
Doreen Katz has been appointed to a seven
-year term on the Library board. She was
sworn in at the regular
board meeting
in May, and replaces
Chad Anderson,
who retired from
the Board after nine
years of service.
“Serving on the
board of trustees is
a way for me to give
back to the community
and to pursue
my two great loves
– books and old buildings,” says Katz.
Katz graduated from Case Western
Reserve University with a B.S. in civil
engineering and worked for 10 years as a
forensic engineer, investigating building
failures and managing building repair
projects throughout Northeast Ohio. She
then started her own consulting business,
designing renovations for older homes and
investigating insurance claims.
Writing under a pen name, she has
published two best-selling novels and
will release a third later this year. She
speaks at libraries and book festivals
across the region.
She hopes to represent the interests
of Shaker families as the board prioritizes
Library facility repairs and upgrades, and
analyzes funding options. As a forensic
engineer, she is dedicated to increasing
awareness of the Library’s Shaker Buildings
Database and working with the Cleveland
Restoration Society, the Shaker Building Department,
and the Shaker Historical Society.
She likes to read literary and
historical fiction, mysteries, and horror.
Her recommended reading list includes
her favorite books, Slaughterhouse-Five
by Kurt Vonnegut, Catcher in the Rye by
J.D. Salinger, All the Light We Cannot See
by Anthony Doerr, The Yiddish Policemen’s
Union by Michael Chabon, Rebecca by
Daphne Du Maurier, Ill Will by Dan
Chaon, Cop Town by Karin Slaughter, and
The Stand by Stephen King.
Katz serves on the Board of the
Greater Cleveland League of Women
Voters, Shaker Heights Chapter, and
is an active member of the Boulevard
Elementary School PTO. She lives in the
Boulevard area with her husband, Irving, an
IT consultant, and their two children.
With Hunter Douglas window fashions,
the possibilities are endless.
