Summer Reading Program
Helps Prevent “Summer Slide”
While school-age children typically look forward
to a relaxing summer free from school routines,
it’s also a time when teachers and parents worry
about learning loss, known as the “summer slide.”
The term denotes a downward slide for
students who don’t continue to practice skills
acquired during the school year. Reading, math
skills, and more can get lost or forgotten during
the lazy days of summer. The Library’s summer
reading program offers an excellent opportunity
to prevent learning loss. Plus it’s fun!
Studies have shown that summer slide is
real and achievement loss over one summer can
be as great as one month or more of instruction.
