Announces the Winners
of this Year’s
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Student Writing Competition
In 1964, President Lyndon Johnson
signed the Civil Rights Act into law. This
landmark piece of legislation outlawed
discrimination against racial, ethnic, and
religious minorities and women. Shaker
Library invited young people in grades 3
through 8 to write a short essay or poem
on what they could do to ensure that
everyone is treated equally. The winners
read their essays and were honored at
an awards reception the afternoon of
January 18 at the Main Library. The
winners included:
Grades 3 & 4
1st Place: Mary Margaret Cole, 4th grader
at Onaway School.
2nd Place: Elliot Goldman, 4th grader at
Onaway School.
3rd Place: Célina Bethoux, 4th grader at
Boulevard School.
Grades 5 & 6
1st Place: Janiyah Brown, 5th grader at
Woodbury Elementary School.
2nd Place: Victor Matts, 5th grader at
Woodbury Elementary School.
3rd Place: Andrea Harrison, 5th grader at
St. Dominic School.
Grades 7 & 8
1st Place: Leonardo Villa-Forte, 7th grader
at St. Dominic School.
2nd Place: Kailynn Gaither, 7th grader at
St. Dominic School.
3rd Place: DeAndra Washington, 8th
grader at St. Dominic School.
Judges for the contest included
Cheryl Darden, Ann Fink, and Alex Jones.
Readers for the finalists included April
Hall and Notre Dame College students
Theodore Darden IV and Blair Harris.
