Enjoy Coffee & Conversation
In our busy lives, how often do we have
the opportunity to hold meaningful
conversations with our neighbors? The
Library’s Coffee and Conversation seeks to
provide this opportunity by bringing people
together at the library. The 45-minute,
drop-in program is held at 10:30 am the
first and third Thursdays of each month in
the magazine section of the Main Library.
The program begins with a resident who
talks about his or her life experiences and
then leads to a free-flowing conversation with everyone in attendance. Friends of the
Shaker Library provides coffee and pastries while residents explore differences and find
common ground with others.
Lisa Smith, a fairly new Shaker resident, says that Coffee and Conversation is “a
great opportunity to actually get to know your neighbors instead of just seeing and
having small talk with them. It allows for in-depth conversation.” Shaker Heights High
School alum Kai Kyles believes the program creates a “comfortable atmosphere to drift
into open dialogue on our lives individually and collectively.”
Sergeant Marvin Lamielle of the Shaker Heights Police Department appreciated the
opportunity to have casual conversation with residents. “It was a great opportunity to
engage residents in a format that allowed them to see me as a normal person, not just a
police officer in their community. It was a great opportunity for me to enhance my professional
appearance to the community through personal interaction.”
