Camps Enrich Young Minds
Shaker students sampled a variety of
possible careers and improved their skills
at the District’s Summer, Exploration,
Learning and Fun (SELF) camps, testing
the waters as inventors, video game
developers, authors, chefs, scientists,
ceramicists, orchestra members, jewelry
designers, and more. This was the SELF
program’s second year.
Approximately 1,200 Shaker
students participated in the camps this
year, nearly 200 more students than
last year. A total of 62 camps (up from
last year’s 52) were offered at Mercer
Elementary School, the Middle School,
and the High School.
Lomond Assistant Principal Tina
McCauley, who is the director of the
SELF program, says that she looks
forward to reviewing teacher proposals
for additional programs next year.
“It’s been exciting to see the growth
and commitment of the Shaker staff
to the SELF program,” she says. “We’ve
been able to provide differentiated
services and enrichment opportunities
for all Shaker students.” SL
