The Bookshelf: Random Reading
In June, the Library welcomed a Random
House representative to discuss the most
promising titles of 2014. Here are some that
looked especially interesting.
Fiction
The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell. Random
House, 2014. The bestselling author of Cloud
Atlas returns with a vast, hypnotic novel that
weaves six narratives spanning from 1984 to
the 2030s.
Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands by Chris
Bohjalian. Doubleday, 2014. From the
bestselling author of Midwives and The
Sandcastle Girls comes a heartbreaking,
wildly inventive, and moving novel narrated
by a teenage runaway.
The Distance by Helen Giltrow. Doubleday,
2014. In this dark, ultra-contemporary, and
relentlessly paced debut thriller, a London
society woman tries to put her secret criminal
past behind her, but a hit man offers her an
impossible job she can’t refuse.
The Girls from Corona del Mar by Rufi
Thorpe. Knopf, 2014. This first novel is about
friendships formed in youth and how these
bonds, challenged by loss, illness, parenthood,
and distance, either break or strengthen.
Some Luck by Jane Smiley. Knopf,
2014. A Pulitzer Prize-winning author (A
Thousand Acres) offers a heartwarming,
deeply engaging novel of the life and times
of an American farm family over three
transformative decades.
The Thing About December by Donal Ryan.
Steerforth, 2014. The author’s debut novel,
The Spinning Heart, garnered great acclaim,
including the Guardian First Book Award
and Irish Book Awards Book of the Year.
His follow-up offers a window into
today’s Ireland.
Nonfiction
Food: A Love Story by Jim Gaffigan. Crown
Archetype, 2014. In the follow-up to his New
York Times bestseller Dad Is Fat, comedian
Gaffigan takes on his favorite topic: food.
In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and
Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette
by Hampton Sides. Doubleday, 2014. A New
York Times bestselling author returns with a
white-knuckle tale of polar exploration and
survival in the Gilded Age.
Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and
Redemption by Bryan Stevenson. Spiegel &
Grau, 2014. A visionary legal thinker, social
justice advocate, and MacArthur genius offers
an intimate and unforgettable journey into
the broken American criminal justice system.
Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman
Tells You What She’s “Learned” by Lena
Dunham. Random House, 2014. From the
acclaimed creator, producer, and star of HBO’s
“Girls” comes a hilarious, wise, and extremely
frank series of essays, confirming her as one
of the brightest writers today.
